Its not irrelevant at all! In fact, I requested this feature back when Allen
first implemented field rendering. LW does a fair amount of setup calculations
every time there is camera or object motion. With field rendering, their is
motion between the two fields meaning that these calculations must be performed
twice. But when you render with multiple segments, the setup calcs are performed
2 x (# of segments). Using the default segment size, that means 8 times rather
than 2. This can really add up for relatively complex scenes. The same is true
for motion blur and DOF, ie. setup calcs = AA passes * (# of segments). This
is one of the many little things to make scenes more efficient that most people
don't know about.
